Winter electrical safety tips for Brisbane homes

While Brisbane winters may not be as harsh as those in the southern states, the drop in temperature still sends many of us reaching for electric heaters, blankets, and other warming appliances. But before you plug in and power up, it’s important to think about safety.

Faulty electrical devices are one of the leading causes of winter house fires across Australia – and unfortunately, most of these incidents could be avoided with some basic precautions.

Here are some practical winter electrical safety tips for Brisbane homes:

1. Be cautious with electric blankets

Electric blankets can be a cosy way to stay warm on those crisp Brisbane nights – but they can also be a hidden hazard.
Over time, wiring can wear out, or damage can occur without you noticing. Always check for:

  • Frayed cords or exposed wires

  • Hotspots or uneven heating areas

  • A strange smell when turned on

Tip: If your blanket is more than 5 years old, it’s worth replacing it — or at least having it checked by a licensed electrician.

2. Inspect heaters for faults

Whether you’re using a portable fan heater, radiant heater, or oil column heater, make sure it’s in proper working condition.
Heaters can be faulty at times — and often it’s not obvious.

Look for signs like:

  • Cracked casing or rattling noises

  • Unusual smells or discolouration

  • Failing to heat evenly or tripping your power

And never run a heater overnight or place it too close to curtains, bedding or furniture. Always keep a one-metre clearance around any heating unit.

3. Avoid overloading powerboards

Winter is the season when powerboards get pushed to their limits. Avoid plugging too many high-wattage appliances (like heaters, dryers, or kettles) into the same outlet or powerboard — it’s a major fire risk.

Tip: If you’re unsure, use one appliance per outlet and unplug what you’re not using.

4. Check your smoke alarms

This one might not be about electrical appliances directly, but it’s vital. Your smoke alarms are your first line of defence in a house fire. Make sure:

  • Batteries are fresh (or better yet, use 10-year lithium models)

  • Alarms are tested monthly

  • You have alarms installed in every bedroom and hallway

5. Book an electrical safety inspection

If your home is older, or if you’ve noticed flickering lights, buzzing powerpoints, or tripping circuits, it might be time for a licensed electrician to take a look. Winter is when demand on your home’s electrical system increases – don’t leave it to chance.
