Is Your Home Ready for Winter?

7 Electrical Safety Checks Brisbane Homeowners Should Do Now

As the temperature drops across Brisbane, most households start reaching for heaters, electric blankets, and dryers. While winter here isn’t extreme, the increased reliance on electrical appliances can quietly put extra strain on your home’s system.

The result? Higher risk of faults, outages, or even electrical fires.

The good news is that a few simple checks can go a long way in keeping your home safe, efficient, and stress-free this winter.

1. Test Your Smoke Alarms

This is non-negotiable.

With heaters and electrical appliances running more often, the risk of fire increases during winter. Make sure all smoke alarms are:

  • Working properly (press the test button)

  • Less than 10 years old

  • Installed in the correct locations (bedrooms, hallways, etc.)

If your alarms are hardwired, it’s worth having a professional ensure they’re compliant and connected correctly.

2. Check Power Boards and Extension Leads

Winter often means more devices plugged in at once — heaters, electric blankets, phone chargers, and more.

Look out for:

  • Overloaded power boards

  • Damaged or frayed cords

  • Double adapters stacked into one outlet

A good rule: if it looks messy or feels hot, it’s a problem. Upgrade to quality surge-protected power boards and avoid daisy-chaining.

3. Inspect Your Heater Setup

Portable heaters are one of the biggest winter electrical hazards.

Make sure:

  • Heaters are kept at least 1 metre away from flammable materials (curtains, bedding, furniture)

  • They’re plugged directly into a wall socket (not a power board)

  • Cords and plugs aren’t damaged

If you’re using older heaters, it might be time to upgrade to a safer, energy-efficient model.

4. Test Your Safety Switch (RCD)

Your safety switch (also called an RCD) is designed to cut power instantly if something goes wrong.

To test it:

  • Press the “test” button on your switchboard

  • The power should shut off immediately

  • Reset it afterward

If it doesn’t trip, or you’re unsure, get it checked ASAP – it could save a life.

5. Look for Flickering Lights or Tripping Circuits

These are early warning signs that your electrical system may be under stress.

Common winter causes:

  • Increased appliance usage

  • Faulty wiring

  • Overloaded circuits

If your lights flicker or your breaker trips regularly, don’t ignore it – this is exactly how bigger issues start.

6. Check Outdoor Electricals

Brisbane winters can still bring moisture, dew, and the occasional storm.

Inspect:

  • Outdoor power points (are they weatherproof and sealed?)

  • Garden lighting

  • Extension leads used outside

Water and electricity don’t mix – even small exposure can become dangerous.

7. Book a Professional Electrical Inspection

If it’s been a few years since your last electrical check, winter is the perfect time to get ahead of problems.

A licensed electrician can:

  • Identify hidden faults
  • Ensure your home meets current safety standards
  • Recommend upgrades to improve efficiency and safety

Think of it like a service for your home – preventative, not reactive.
